    Alienware 18 Bios Driver update....?

Hello, I don't have your machine sorry but here's my insight. The general rule is that if you aren't having any issues with your machine then don't flash the BIOS. Saying that, I always update my BIOS whether I need it or not. I've never had any issues but you do hear of horror stories. It's...

    cpu upgrade

If you're into overclocking then you should see an improvement with the 6 core CPU's but for general gaming I'm not sure you will see a big difference. Newer titles are becoming more CPU dependent though so if you want the best performance for a few more years without having to upgrade your...

    Alienware 17 information wanted

I know what you mean. I'm a Plant Manager for a construction company so it's my job to order parts for cars, trucks, and light/heavy machinery. - Hence the CAT Yellow spray job I did on my AW 13 in my pic.

Those AW machines are the older style generation (M14x, M15x, M17x and also the M18x). I've owned all of them at some point (still have two M18x). I wouldn't think they are compatible with your model but I never had a newer style 17. If it's just the control board for the pad then maybe they...

    Alienware 17 information wanted

Yours is definitely the first gen 17 which was released with the 880M in 2014. The R2 came out with the 980M. It looks like it is also referred to as the P18E. I'm not sure if other versions of the 17 were also called a P18E.

The R5 is the most recent model of the 17 so you definitely don't have that one. The first gen Alienware 17 was often called the R5 because it followed the old generation M17x R4.

Once you have the service tag then the Dell website should tell you exactly what generation it is. If if just says Alienware 17 then you have the first gen 17. It should say Alienware 17 R2, R3, etc if you have a later model. See pic below.

Have you tried using the service tag on the bottom of your machine on the Dell Website? If you go to the support section you can enter this number and find out about your particular machine.

    The Xeonmorph - My X51 R2

It's stored away in a box somewhere at my mother-in-laws while we wait to move into our new house in a week or so.

    The Xeonmorph - My X51 R2

Yeah, no overclock for me. Oh well, I'll probably sell the old 3770K. They are still getting decent money.

    The Xeonmorph - My X51 R2

I put a silent CPU fan in mine a while back which works well but the stock heatsink isn't that great. I hadn't thought about the limitations with the mobo. I'll have to do some research.

    The Xeonmorph - My X51 R2

Nice work. I recently dusted off (literally) my old X51 R1 which has been in pieces for years. I grabbed a cheap small form factor 1060 off eBay (not reference so we'll see how it goes...) and a new SSD. Spent last night reinstalling Windows and Drivers. It has the 3770 in there but I have a...

    Graphics card

Jeez it would have been about 4 years ago since I had my R4 and I can hardly remember how I dressed myself this morning. I can't remember if it's just an easy download and install from Dell or from a disk image. I'm sure you'd just have to put your service tag in the Dell Support page and start...

This is the older style keyboard right? I have one at home so i can have a look when I get back tonight.

I have done many BIOS updates and never had a problem. You only hear about the horror stories and never about the other 99.9% which go perfectly. It's 100% up to you though. It's usually suggested to never update more than 3 versions past you current version but I always do each available one in...

Alienware 17 R5 Keyboard Stopped Working

That sucks. Dell should be doing more than that to help you. It sounds possibly like a motherboard issue. I would consider a loose connection to the mobo but if it works in the bios then it couldn't be. Alienware now have an official Reddit account so I would probably try them there if you...

You can try to reset the CMOS/BIOS. Not sure it will work but it's helped me out a few times before. There should be a few videos online showing you how to do it. I would guess that the issue is from your old BIOS version not recognising the newer card. I am surprised that reinstalling the old...

    Installing a RTX 2060 FE in a X51 R1 ?

The 2060 draws 160W at max compared to 120W on the 960. You may end up with random system crashes with the 2060 but people seemed to have the 2070 working which draws 185W so it could work fine. I think the 2060 is only a 9" card so the length isn't a problem.
