The difference between the M17xR1 and the R2 is the motherboard. The R1 has the F415N, which supports i5 and the R2 has the 14M8C, which supports i7. If he truly has an R2, the CPU will work just fine. If memory serves, the 14M8C supports up to i7 740XM. I have an i7 720QM in mine...hoping to upgrade to at least the 720XM someday.

Erm, correction - I have the 740 QM, not the 720. Just took a look at my specs...think I had a brain fart or something. O__o
