Alienware x51 R1 upgrading?

So I recently was suggested by dell / alienware that i could upgrade my R1 with a PNY GTX 970, I posted a thread awhile back on how it worked ofr a few hours than it started randomly rebooting.

I figured out i didnt have the 240W power supply. Bought that already and Dell is waiting to restock for the R2 power boards.

Now the question is I've read that people have made the R1 power board work fine with the pny gtx 970 (possibly underclocking with MSI ? ) If so please let me know.


I also have a GTX 650 I found lying around thats never been used (it works) so I was wondering if I could just plug this in if I can't get the 970 to run on my current PC until I get the r2 board?

I am currently running a GT 640 in my Alienware x51 R1

• Uncheck both 3D features
• Optimize Everything!

Power Plan: Performance

• Turn Hard disk off: Never
• Sleep: Never
• Allow Wake Timers: Disable
• USB Selective Suspend: Enable
• PCI Link Express: Disabled
• Processor Min. 5% / Cooling Active / Max. 97%
• Turn Off Display: Never

PrecisionX 4.2.1:

• OSD Monitor: Power / Temp / Clock / Fan / GPU usage - keep an eye on how she's doin'
• Lower power target to 97%

Nvidia Inspector

• Profile Settings (Elevated)
• Adaptive Vsync ON - either 3D app. or Forced On
• Texture filter - Quality: set to Performance
• Power Management Mode: PREFERRED_PSTATE_PREFER_CONSISTENT_PERFORMANCE

Work with the card.
Monitor how she runs.
Adjust in-game effects accordingly.

Just some suggestions.
Become 'One' with your machine.
Tuned just right and she'll perform.
