Can used games still be played online?

Let's say you buy a used game in the disc format with everything as if new (MW3) could you play online with it.

Only if there is no requirement to register it to something such a steam.

Or if it has not been banned for some reason or another.

Yeah, most likely the game is account related. But lately games are requiring for you to use passes to enable the online options, so if the code has been used already (I'm thinking of a PS3 scenario as of now), then no, you can't play online.

You can still play it online PS3 or a 360, you just have to pay for tbe pass to do so.
