External Speakers

Well my laptop has really turned into a desktop that I now have two 27" monitors connected to it. Now the next step is to upgrade the sound. So my current crappy speakers connect via the head phone jack. when I do it asks me if they are headphones or a center channel. So I have a few questions here:

1. Should new speakers connect into audio jack?
2. If so what options do I select?
3. Should I look at USB speakers?

Go for KRK moniter speakers!! they are awesome!

1 Yes, plug them into the headphone jack
2 Select "headphones" is fine
3 NO, USB speaker will use their own built in sound cards and generally sound poor.
