Hello all,

I need advise from the wealth of experience from the other forum users here. Below are my specs

M17xR3
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bits
Geforce GTX 580M
i7-2860 CPU @ 2.50GHz
16 GB RAM

System was purchased for the pervious BF3 when it first came out I already checked and confirmed to have download the latest driver for my GPU but am still recommended by Nvidia GeForce Experience to run everything from A-Z on lowest setting. My Resolution is still at 1920 x 1080. When I do raise anything like the Mesh Quality to Mid FPS drops to 40 on heavy action during game play.

This user on youtube doesn't seem to be having any problems with his GPU though

Main thing is I need to know if there anything abnormal with my GPU. Should this the norm that I can expect from my 2 year old GPU? Is there anything I can do to optimize performance? At these setting I can only engage other players at close but not mid or long range on my FPS.

Thanks in advance

The reason he can play on higher settings is because your using the 580mobile card the person on the utube video is using the 580 full size card. Not a laptop card

here is a link to battlefield 4 on an overclocked 7970mobile which is a much better card than yours. I know as I used to have the gtx 675 which is basically a rebranded 580m now I have the 7970m its as good as the NVidia gtx 680m overclocking your card will make the game more playable but take care when overclocking unless you have done it before as it can fry your card. Their is overclocking guides on here but do it at your own risk

Thank you for the reply shankc,

Unfortunately Alienware Singapore tech support said they can only advise that I upgrade to the GTX 590 as that only complies with my current motherboard. I really need to ask around for this issue. This is regrettably out of my limited area of knowledge.

Wonder if anyone in this forum would know if any ungraded GPU system out that could work with my current system?

I'm sure it is possible for you to upgrade to the 7970m or the 680m but the 680m will be double the price of the 7970 without much if any gain. all you will need is modded video drivers you may even be able to upgrade to the new 780m with modded drivers if you have a look on laptopvideo2go.com you will find the drivers and a simple google search will confirm which is possible. You should even be able to find a guide from people who have upgraded either on here or Alienwarearena.com infact below is link from a quick google search about people who have upgraded hope this gets you started

Open question to anyone that has personal experience modding drivers and if there is any limitation off fitting 7970M or any a more sutiable GPU in my laptop that was originally designed for a GTX 580M?

This is a big step for me and am at total lost at every single step. If this work out you have my eternity gratitude but I am unable to risk a fire hazard and lost of my laptop if this goes south =(

You can definitely put any of the newest cards in your machine with a little bit of extra effort. Yes your machine was not designed for these cards since they had not come out yet but it can be done. Some cards just need a modded driver while some may need a modded BIOS or vBIOS. I would suggest heading to tech inferno for more information. The guys there are modding specialists and everything you need to know is there.
It is strange that your machine is telling you to run on low settings but getting 40fps while in demanding areas isn't too bad. I remember getting similar FPS when I was running BF3 on an M17x R3. I always found that putting things up to med or high didn't change much until I upped the AA.
Anyway, I would agree that the 7970M is the best value one to put in but the 780M would be the best performer.
Good luck!

Thank You MattyB, Appreciate all the help I can get. Thinking of looking for local talent back here in Singapore. This would help me avoid all the frustration as I have near zero knowledge and confidence in doing this myself. Happy New Year in advance too all here =)
