Hello All,
I want to buy my son new components for his gaming computer for Xmas. It’s a few years old and could probably benefit from a little upgrading. It has never had any type of upgrades. How/what can I do to get most out of it on a $500 budget, or would getting a new one, same budget, be better? See pictures for specs and let me know if you need more information.

It may be better to find a new system. Your CPU, GPU, RAM and HDD could do with upgrading.
You can upgrade the CPU to a 4770 and then you're best to find something like a Founders Edition GTX 1060. I'd swap the HDD out for a 512Gb SSD and then get two 8gb RAM sticks (I think they are DDR3L from the pics).
You may be able to find a system someone has already upgraded for not much more than $500 (or less) and then you can sell yours.

I would get a 1660 blower type from pny, which is on sale for $209.99. Dell website.
Upgrade the cpu to an i7-4770, which you can buy renewed on amazon for $175.99.
Upgrade the ram to 2 sticks of 8gb ddr3 which is around $64.99 for corsair vengence lp.
Buy new cpu paste for under $10.00.
Get a 6-pin to 8-pin adapter for $6.99 on amazon.

I'm assuming you have a x51 r2.
