Hello,

New member here, looking forward to being part of the community.

I'd like to get some basic advice and upgrade options for my wife's Alienware Aurora. It was bought from the factory new in 2010 or 2011. She says it used to work amazingly for gaming, but obviously it's time for some affordable upgrades.

She had it in storage for several years while she was in college. After taking it out of storage it worked fine for a few weeks, but then the hard drive crashed. In a pinch we replaced it with an SSD. She lost all her files and had to install Windows 10 (which she hates). She's not sure of the model (as the manual is still in storage); she believes it's an Aurora 6; however I think it's either an R3 or R4. The base specs for it are: Processor: Intel Corel i7 930@ 2.80 GHz, Installed Ram: 6 GB, OS: Win 10 Pro 64 bit.

The main focus for this computer is gaming, what can we do to get her up to speed within budget? Thanks for any assistance!

Hello and welcome.
It would be the R3 with that CPU. If you want to keep the same mother board then you'll have to stay with the same generation CPU. They are a little old now so it could bottleneck your system with a new generation GPU. It would really depend what games you're wanting to run. If you've got the original GPU in it still then it's probably a GTX 260 or 280, maybe a 400 series. I'd say a 1060 would be a decent cheap upgrade. It will be a huge improvement if you're still running the original card.
I'm not sure what the max RAM was for that motherboard, I think it can take 16gb. I'm assuming it is DDR3 and the max speed would be 1333 or 1600. There should be a sticker on the RAM stick which tells you it's specs. 6gb is a little thin these days so I'd look at upgrading that too (to 16gb if you can)

Hi Axx & Matt, if it's an Intel 930 (X58 skt 1366) that means it's an R1 > the R2 = P55 1156, R3 = P67 1155, R4 = X79 2011 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alienware#Desktops) > top R1 CPUs = 975, 980x, 990x > my friend has an R1 + GTX 1070 > try for 1600MHz DDR3

Inside edge of the back rear panel where keyboard plugs in, find your Windows 7 product key in order to reinstall 7, example source: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7 >< AlienAddict's ISO (installs activated / virus-free / authentic copy of OEM 7 DVD) https://na.alienwarearena.com/ucf/show/917502/boards/technical-support-1/ForumPost/original-windows-7-os

If you like the case & wish to put a modern motherboard/cpu/ddr4 in it (sell the old stuff also), browse or chime into Luke's post https://www.alienowners.com/threads/aurora-r4-alx-case-with-8700k-and-rtx-2080ti.7876/

Ahh the R3 had the 2600. That makes more sense.

I actually had two R2's so you'd think I'd be able to remember that.
