It should run the 970 as long as it fits.

I'm really interested in the possibility of running the 980 if it draws 175w. My current 670 draws 170w and is really stable, might buy it and give it a try.

The GTX 660 in my x51 is 9.5 inches. The GTX 970 is listed at 10.5 inches. My guess is, it's going to be too long....Damn

This EVGA one is listed as being 9.5 inches but I'm scared in case it isn't actually as pretty much every other 970 I've seen is 10.5.

I ordered the 980 since it runs at 165w. The front fan has to be removed in order to let the card fit. One guy on neogaf has already put in a 980 in, he bought the factory overclocked one but had to downclock to right above stock levels in order to keep from restarting.

Supposedly it runs cooler than the GTX 670.

I will confirm first hand when I get my 980 on Tuesday. I'll take pics.

Nice, will look into this. I have been sitting on Neogaf waiting for someone to talk about their x51 experience but must have missed that.

That was me :)

Been using the 980GTX for much of the day running benchmarks, playing games. Temps never get above 72 degrees but I have had to down clock it bit to prevent it shutting down PC as soon as games load.

It definitely will not fit with the existing fan on the front, behind the Alienware logo on the front, but you can replace it with a 10mm fan of the same size. Make sure to get a 4 pin one, the 3 has no speed control and mine is noisy as hell.

Awesome! You've re-motivated me to get a 980. Was only really worried about getting it in there.

Does any1 have a Fan Model or a picture of it?Or where to get it? :)
Also when u say Downclock the 980 meaning u bought OC'ed Version . So Stock 1126Base Clock (MHz)
1216 Boost will work fine?

Will a card with more than one fan such as this one work?

No you need to get the reference design, the EVGA one is the one I got.

It should be fine, mine is running at 1240 with Boost consistently at the moment. i wouldn't recommend going for an OC model, getting it to stay under clocked proved more complicated than it should be.

Hi I have just installed the Palit GeForce GTX970 in my X51 R1. No issues as long as it is the blower style and it is 9.5 inches so fits without making any modifications. runs cooler and quiter than the gtx 760 I replaced.

I have a x51 R1 (I7 3770, 16gb of ram, GTX 660, 2tb hard drive, optical drive in) and I installed an EVGA GTX 970 FTW in my system, It shuts down and reboots my system upon entering videogame main menus, sometimes I'm able to get in game and play with 60fps but that's until the next loading screen, otherwise I can benchmark for as long as I want too. I have downclocked the card to stock speeds and it still restarts periodically, I wonder why your palit doesn't.. Also people have been telling me the blower single fan is better for the x51? Someone already put a R2 powerboard in their R1 so if that works out, hopefully my 970 will work aswell

has not given any problems. What BIOS version have you installed? How do you have it connected to your monitor , HDMI or DVI?
